Baptism is sometimes referred to as a christening.
Christening means joining to Christ, and through the sacrament of Baptism we
are united to Christ, become members of the Church, and are welcomed into
Faith and into our faith community. It is our Catholic belief that the
sacrament of Baptism expresses the wonderful gift of God by which we are
made holy, become children of God, and temples of the Holy Spirit.
Parents are called to the promise to: teach their child by word and action
about God, about faith and values; teach their child how to pray; to ensure
that the child receives religious education; and to ensure that the family
worships together regularly. Parents are required to attend Baptism
instruction before the child is baptized. We look forward to meeting
with and assisting parents as they begin to plan for their child’s Baptism.
The role of the Godparent is to represent the Christian
community at the ceremony of Baptism. Godparents are called to be
examples of the Faith and what being a Christian is about. In the
Baptism ceremony, one Godparent must be:
* fully initiated into the
Catholic Church, have received the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation
* living
a life in harmony with the Faith and receiving Eucharist
* married sponsors need to have had a sacramental
marriage within the Catholic Church
